Pink Tape Sizes Guide – 6mm, 12mm, 18mm, 24mm, 36mm

Choosing the right pink tape size is as important as choosing the right winding thread. Too narrow and you need multiple overlapping wraps (wasting time and tape), too wide and the tape won't fit in tight spaces or fold properly around coil ends. This guide covers which size to use for each application.

SizeBest ForMotor TypeUsage Notes
6mmSmall slots, tight spacesTable fans, small appliance motorsUsed where 12mm is too wide to fit. Also used for spot-wrapping individual connection points
12mmStandard motor windingCeiling fans, table fans, small pumps (0.5-2 HP)Most popular size in India. The default choice for rewinding workshops
18mmMedium-large motorsWater pumps (3-7.5 HP), submersible motorsGood balance between coverage and flexibility. Second most popular size
24mmLarge motors, wide coverageIndustrial motors (10+ HP), transformer windingProvides fast coverage for larger stator slots and coil end turns
36mmOuter wrapping, full coverageLarge industrial motors, transformersUsed for outer layer insulation and wrapping completed coil groups

Size Selection by Motor Type

Ceiling Fan Motors – Use 12mm

Ceiling fan stators have relatively small slots and compact coil end turns. 12mm pink tape fits perfectly for slot closure, layer insulation, and coil end wrapping. Some rewinders prefer 6mm for the slot closure only (where space is very tight) and 12mm for the coil ends.

Water Pump Motors (0.5-5 HP) – Use 12mm or 18mm

Smaller water pump motors (0.5-2 HP) use 12mm tape. Larger water pump motors (3-5 HP) have bigger slots and benefit from 18mm tape which provides faster coverage without needing as many overlapping wraps.

Submersible Pump Motors – Use 18mm + Glass Tape

For submersible motors, many professionals use a combination: 18mm pink tape for initial layer insulation, followed by glass tape of the same width for the outer layers. Glass tape provides the higher temperature rating needed for sealed motor casings. Read: Pink Tape vs Glass Tape – Complete Comparison

Industrial Motors (10+ HP) – Use 24mm or 36mm

Large industrial motors have wide stator slots and substantial coil end turns. 24mm or 36mm tape provides efficient coverage. For very large motors (50+ HP), 36mm is the standard choice to minimise wrapping time during manufacturing.

Transformer Winding – Use 24mm or 36mm

Transformer winding uses wide pink tape for layer-to-layer insulation between copper wire layers. 24mm and 36mm provide the coverage needed for transformer bobbin widths.

Tips for Using Pink Tape

Frequently Asked Questions

Which pink tape size is used for ceiling fan winding?

12mm pink tape is the most common size for ceiling fan motor winding. It provides adequate coverage for the slot openings and coil end turns of standard ceiling fan stators.

What is the most popular pink tape size?

12mm is the most widely sold size in India, used for ceiling fans, table fans, and small water pump motors. 18mm is the second most popular.

Should I use pink tape or glass tape for submersible motors?

Glass tape is recommended for submersible motors due to its higher temperature resistance (180°C vs 130°C for pink tape). Submersible motors operate in sealed casings that trap heat.
